VP’s drop in wealth due to election protest costs

EXPENSES ON the election protest filed by losing candidate and former senator Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. against Vice-President Maria Leonor G. Robredo was “mostly” the reason why her total wealth dropped in her first six months in office, her camp said. Ms. Robredo declared a total net worth of P8.8 million as of December 2016, down by more than P2 million from the P11.05 million she reported in her June Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth. “Vice-President Leni Robredo’s net worth decreased due mostly to expenses in relation to the Election Protest filed by Bongbong Marcos, such as filing fee, as well as family and personal expenses,” Ibarra M. Gutierrez III, Ms. Robredo’s legal counsel, said in a statement yesterday. Mr. Marcos, who lost to Ms. Robredo in the May 2016 election, filed a poll protest before the Supreme Court, sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal. Ms. Robredo also filed a counter-protest. -- Raynan F. Javil
