1st Tryp by Wyndham hotel in Manila to open in June

THE HOSPITALITY arm of listed holding firm Phinma Corp. will open the first branch of hotel brand Tryp under Wyndham at the Mall of Asia complex this year, with an eye on millennial travelers.

“Tryp by Wyndham is a little bit more (handsome), a little sexier catering to millennials. That’s 195 rooms in the Mall of Asia complex and is supposed to open in June,” Jose Mari del Rosario, president and chief executive officer of Microtel Inns & Suites (Pilipinas), Inc. said in a recent interview with BusinessWorld.

Mr. del Rosario did not disclose the total investment for the Tryp by Wyndham hotel, only saying they invested P3 million for each room in the 18-story hotel.

The Tryp by Wyndham hotel, which sits on a 1,000-square meter property, is the brand’s first in Southeast Asia. The hotel brand has 110 branches in major cities globally, including Brisbane, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, Berlin, Buenos Aires and New York City.

Construction of the hotel started in 2015, after Microtel Pilipinas signed the agreement with Wyndham Hotel Group to bring the Tryp by Wyndham brand to the Philippines.

Under the master franchise of Microtel Inn & Suites (Pilipinas), Inc., Tryp will be the company’s 14th property in the Philippines.

Microtel Pilipinas signed the franchise agreement for the Tryp brand in 2015. There are plans to develop at least eight in a 10-year period.

Mr. del Rosario said they are also looking for other prospects in El Nido and Coron in Palawan, but have yet to finalize the terms for these projects.

Microtel Pilipinas, which is also the Philippine master franchisor of Microtel by Wyndham, is also set to expand in San Fernando, Pampanga.

“We are breaking ground in San Fernando, Pampanga for 80 rooms,” Mr. del Rosario said.

Microtel Pilipinas is banking on domestic tourists to stay in its hotels.

“We’re positioning ourselves more at domestic tourism, and if at most from international those that can travel for four hours, that’s ASEAN, China, Japan, Korea, so that market,” he added.
