Jewelry for the tough cookie
THE INDEPENDENCE of the modern woman is at the heart of Tiffany & Co.’s new collection, called Hardwear.
Men can join in the fun too, as the pieces, ranging from necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and rings are inspired by a unisex bracelet from 1971.
When we say that the collection implies independence, it’s because the designs are based off of balls and chains. A release says that the designs “capture the industrialism of the city.” We see the bleak implications of this statement in the ball and chain -- but then, the collection, described as “elegantly subversive” on its web site, was modeled via a campaign launched at the last Superbowl, starring performing artist Lady Gaga, who could be described as “elegantly subversive” as well.
While the ball and chain around a person’s neck may imply imprisonment and being trapped, wearing them while moving freely may imply a sort of breaking away, and practicing a certain freedom while wearing a reminder of the confinement. But we’re getting too serious here.
In any case, the pieces are crafted in either sterling steel and 18k gold. Stunning pieces include finely crafted ball-shaped drop earring suspended along chains, and necklaces with thick aggressive chains supporting a ball and a lock. A bracelet with a ball calls to mind handcuffs or manacles -- the collection isn’t for the mild, meek-mannered girl, but a strong woman who may have gone through something, and seeks to assert herself or make a statement.
The collection, available in Rustan’s Makati and Rustan’s Shangri-La only, was launched on July 13 at BGC.
Meanwhile, Tiffany & Co. recently named as its CEO Alessandro Bogliolo, a former Bulgari Senior Executive and Diesel’s current CEO. According to a release found in its web site, Mr. Bogliolo said, “I am honored and excited by the opportunity to lead this remarkable company.
“Tiffany, with its legendary history, has always represented luxury, style, and an extraordinary standard of quality and excellence, and I look forward to working with the Board and the rest of the Tiffany team to build on this foundation.”
